A New Life, A Cruel Reality

"She hoped for a beautiful new life… but for her, it remained just a thought. The reality was cruel."

The tragic death of 26-year-old Vishnuja from Elankur, Malappuram, has sent shockwaves through society. On January 30, she was found hanging in her husband Prabhin’s house. Her family and friends claim that this was not a suicide but yet another chapter in the long history of dowry harassment.

Vishnuja and Prabhin got married in 2023.

However, soon after the wedding, her life turned into a tale of suffering. She was constantly humiliated for not bringing enough dowry. She was forced to use the speakerphone while talking to her friends, her personal space and freedom restricted.

Then came January 30—a day that ended it all. Vishnuja was found dead at her husband's house. Her family and friends believe that relentless harassment pushed her to this tragic end.

Following a police investigation, Prabhin was arrested on February 2.

Even though the Dowry Prohibition Act was enacted in India in 1961, cases like this continue to occur frequently. Women are still harassed, tortured, and even driven to death over dowry demands.

Vishnuja’s tragic end is not just the loss of one person; it is a failure of our society. The fact that dowry harassment still takes precedence over dignity and respect in many households is a harsh reality we must confront.

Our responsibility doesn’t end when the case is closed—it ends only when real change happens.

We lost Vishnuja... but let no other girl go through the same fate!

Justice is not just about punishing the guilty; it is about ensuring that such tragedies never happen again.
