Despite strict anti-ragging laws in many colleges and universities, incidents of extreme ragging continue to occur, raising serious concerns. One such shocking case has emerged from Kottayam Government Nursing College, where five senior students have been arrested by the police for brutally ragging their juniors.
For over three months, first-year students endured severe physical and mental abuse at the hands of their seniors. The accused forced their juniors to stand naked, placed dumbbells on their private parts to inflict pain, stabbed them with compasses, applied lotion to intensify their agony, forced them to consume alcohol, and even demanded money while threatening them.
Initially, the victims remained silent out of fear. However, when they realized that enduring the torture was not a solution, they decided to take a stand and filed a complaint with the police.
Following the complaint, the police arrested five students and launched a detailed investigation. The Kottayam Gandhi Nagar Police interrogated the accused, while college authorities suspended them and initiated further inquiries. The investigation is ongoing to determine if more students were involved in the ragging.
Ragging is not a harmless tradition; it is a serious crime that causes deep psychological and physical trauma. Many consider ragging a customary practice, but its consequences can be devastating, sometimes even leading to loss of life. Colleges must take stronger measures to prevent such incidents, ensure a safe learning environment, and conduct awareness programs for students and parents.
