Rethinking Campus Safety: A Call for Change

Arsha Ravi

On December 23, 2024, a 19-year-old student was allegedly assaulted by an intruder on the Anna University campus. The incident occurred despite existing security measures, exposing alarming lapses in safety protocols.

This case has sparked outrage and concern across Tamil Nadu and beyond. A young engineering student’s traumatic experience on campus has raised critical questions about safety, accountability, and justice in educational institutions.

Do you think our campus safety measures are sufficient ?Unfortunately, most institutions fall short when it comes to comprehensive security.

This is just a small part. Let’s come to the main point . The justice system and law enforcement play a crucial role in ensuring campus safety and holding offenders accountable. In my perspective, Justice is more than legal procedures—it’s about providing survivors with the resources they need to heal and move forward. By focusing on survivor-centric approaches, institutions can build trust and ensure that justice is not just delivered but also felt.

This tragic incident is a wake-up call for educational institutions, policymakers, and society as a whole.

It is sure that we all had thought of a cultural shift that we all need . Beyond physical safety, creating an environment of respect and awareness is crucial for long-term change.

It is in high need that Schools and colleges must integrate workshops on consent, respect, and boundaries into their curriculum. These programs can instill empathy and accountability in students. Regular discussions and campaigns on gender equality and safety can normalize conversations and help break cultural taboos.

This case serves as a painful reminder that we need to do better—not just for this survivor, but for everyone. It’s our turn to discuss to make campuses that are not only secure but also supportive and inclusive.

Let’s keep this discussion alive. Share your thoughts, ideas, and solutions. Together, we can ensure that no student ever has to face such trauma again.
