Social Media : A Declaration of Freedom

Arsha Ravi

Social media often acts as the declaration of freedom for the new generation. However, a recent viral Instagram video has exposed a side of society that we should never have to witness.

A girl dancing—something so normal, right? But for some people, it wasn’t. This became clear the moment we opened the comment section. The video received a flood of obscene and degrading remarks—so disturbing that it made us question: Is Kerala really a safe place to live?

Kerala has always taken pride in its high literacy rate and progressive ideologies. It has led the way in battles for gender equality and women's rights. Yet, when a woman's choice of clothing or freedom to express herself still invites not just criticism but sexual harassment, we must pause and reflect—where is our collective conscience? What does this say about our society?

Looking at this from another side, isn’t this an abuse of an individual’s freedom?

Despite Kerala’s advancements, has it truly created an open and safe space for women to live freely? This isn’t to say that men don’t face harassment, but why does it always come at the cost of a woman’s freedom? The issue isn’t limited to social media—can women in Kerala truly feel safe in public spaces? Can they live their lives without fear or judgment? Society must be ready to provide an environment where freedom isn’t conditional.

Society has no right to dictate how a woman should dress or what choices she should make. The responsibility lies with all of us to create a community that respects and upholds personal freedom. Education alone is not enough—active social reform is just as crucial.

True progress can only happen when we change our collective mindset.

So, is Kerala safe to live in? The answer depends on us. It’s reflected in our thoughts, our words, and, most importantly, our actions.

Building a society where both men and women can exist freely, without fear, should be a top priority. And the question of whether this can again happen in Kerala? The answer lies within each of us.
